At the heart of every healthcare safety protocol is a simple goal, to protect people. Yet, overfilled sharps containers continue to compromise that protection, turning routine moments into medical emergencies.

At the AANP Conference this June, I spoke with dozens of nurse practitioners who shared firsthand accounts of the trauma that follows a needlestick injury. These weren’t statistics, they were personal stories. And they painted a devastating picture of what happens when sharps safety is treated as optional.

One practitioner described a colleague who contracted hepatitis C after being pricked by a used needle in a busy hospital setting. Despite following protocol, the overfilled container offered no margin for error. The emotional toll of that experience, the fear, the uncertainty, the impact on family life and career, was profound.

What’s most painful is that all of this is preventable.

Overfilled containers are not a sign of poor care, they’re a symptom of outdated systems. It’s not enough to tell staff to “be careful”. We need smarter solutions that eliminate the risk altogether.

At Nelo, we believe technology should serve the people who serve others. Our intelligent sharps disposal system does more than hold used needles, it helps hospitals and clinics stay ahead of risk, not chase it.

Because behind every incident is a person. And we owe them better.
